Tesla has a new plan to draw in more car buyers and expand its electrification footprint in Texas. The automaker recently launched a new program through Tesla Electric that provides one year of overnight home charging to new Model 3 buyers. If you live in Texas and want to take advantage of the program, make sure you act before June 30.
The deal runs through the end of the quarter and could bring significant gas and electric savings to some buyers. Tesla launched Tesla Electric last year, essentially making it an electricity provider. A previously announced plan included unlimited overnight charging for $30 per month, but this is the first time a fully free charging solution is available.
The catch is that buyers have to be eligible for Tesla Electric and be a customer.
Though we’ve heard a lot about Texas’ grid over the last few years, Tesla is taking advantage of cheaper electricity rates overnight to offer the incentive to its buyers. The automaker noted that electricity rates in Texas are around $.09/kWh in most places and up to $0.095 in Houston.
This move is a smart one for Tesla, as it can draw in more buyers without a significant financial penalty for the automaker. Providing free overnight charging may cost the company a few hundred dollars per year, but it gets buyers that may be willing to pay for other services, such as its “Full Self-Driving” system.
