The Ford Ranger returned to America a few years ago as the automaker’s entry to the midsize truck market, but the rest of the world had been enjoying the pickup while it was on hiatus here. Ford released a new Ranger for other countries last year, and now the U.S. is getting it, along with a Raptor variant for the first time.
The 2024 Ranger gets new styling, a V6 engine option, and new safety and tech features. In addition to the automaker’s venerable turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, buyers can choose an upgraded 2.7-liter V6 with 315 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The mill is shared with the F-150 and Bronco and adds a significant power boost to the Ranger, which was previously offered only with the four-banger here in the States.
Ford gave the truck more interior storage, including a larger center console storage space, larger door pockets, and a second glob box. The rear seats can fold flat to accommodate larger items, and there’s space behind the seats for hidden storage of smaller items. Previous Rangers felt a little cheap inside, even in top trims, but Ford said it upgraded the truck’s materials and design to feel more premium. Ford offers a 400-watt power inverter in the bed with an outlet, and the truck is available with a bumper step for easier bed access.
Tech upgrades include a standard 8-inch digital gauge cluster and an available 12.4-inch unit. Ford equips a standard 10.1-inch infotainment screen, which it said is best-in-class, and buyers can upgrade to a 12-inch system with Synch 4A, which brings over-the-air updates and connected apps.
Ranger buyers have dozens of standard and available safety features to choose from, including blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, adaptive cruise with stop-and-go, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, and Trailer Reverse Guidance.
Though the new Ranger is exciting, we’re all really here for the Raptor. It gets a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 making 405 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It has a ten-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer case, and front and rear locking differentials. 2.5-inch Fox Live Valve shocks keep the truck stable over challenging off-road obstacles, and they react to the selectable drive modes for better performance in specific conditions.
Like other Ford Raptor models, the Ranger Raptor’s interior gets unique styling, including sport seats with Code Orange accents. It also gets a 360-degree camera and a front camera to help with off-roading, and it comes with the larger digital gauge cluster and touchscreen.
The 2024 Ranger and Ranger Raptor will be available for order later this month and should arrive on dealers’ lots this summer. The standard Ranger’s V6 configuration won’t arrive until late fall.
