Subaru currently offers one EV that it developed alongside Toyota. The Solterra is an electric SUV for outdoorsy types, and while it might satisfy the brand’s loyal customers, it’s not quite enough to make Subaru a competitive force in the EV market. That’s going to change over the next few years, as the automaker said it plans to offer four EVs by the end of 2026.
Subaru’s also planning to expand its production capacity, allowing it to move 400,000 EVs a year starting in 2028. That said, the expansion is aimed at the company’s Japanese operations, so it’s not a promising sign for buyers wanting a federal EV tax credit.
Subaru’s new CEO, Atsushi Osaki, recently said the company had tripled its operating profits and will add a dedicated EV production line at its Japanese facilities. The automaker may offer leasing options for its new EVs, which is one way for customers to get around the new tax credit rules, but the outgoing CEO doesn’t believe a lack of tax credits will scare off buyers.
“I wonder if American consumers choose their cars solely based on tax credits. Our U.S. customers are quality customers. We have a higher ratio of customers buying Subarus with cash, and we also have low loan and lease rates. We also keep our incentives at low levels. We will try not to rely only on the subsidy program.”
