Volkswagen has been teasing the upcoming ID.7 electric sedan for a while now, but it’s finally out in the open. The automaker isn’t planning to reveal the car until next week at the Shanghai Auto Show, but un-camouflaged images surfaced on China’s National Intellectual Property Administration website ahead of the announcement.
The images show a futuristic sedan with styling elements from other VW EVs, including the ID.4. In the back, the taillight bar extends across the trunk lid, which also features “ID.7 Vizzion” badging. Images leaked ahead of the ID.4’s unveiling showed similar badging, so it’s unlikely the funky model name will make its way to the United States.
Though it’s not a crossover, at least on paper, the ID.7 features a taller ride height than we expected. It also has a funky rear hatch shape with a large back deck behind the seats, but it’s unclear if that means an open cargo space or just an awkwardly shaped trunk.
A spec sheet with the images shows a range of up to 435 miles and a 787-kWh battery. Output lands at 201 horsepower and the vehicle’s top speed is limited to a sluggish 96 mph. However, China’s speed cameras and the penalties for being caught speeding are likely enough to keep it well below that number.
The ID.7 is expected to come to the U.S. as a 2025 model, which would mean a reveal sometime next year. In the meantime, the automaker’s ID. Buzz electric van will make its debut, so the next few years will be busy for the German company.
