Earlier this year, Tesla heavily cut prices, stirring anger from some owners over the steep decrease in vehicle values. That hasn’t deterred the automaker, as it recently lowered prices on the Model S and Model X.
Twitter user Sawyer Merritt noticed the changes, which range from $5,000 to $10,000, depending on the model. The changes also bring the Model X Plaid and Model S Plaid even on pricing at $109,990. The Model S AWD price dropped from $94,990 to $89,990, and the Model X AWD dropped from $109,990 to $99,990.
Price changes on these expensive models won’t have any impact on Tesla’s tax credit eligibility, but its price cuts earlier this year did. The Model Y’s lower price made it eligible for the $7,500 federal EV tax credits, though that could change in March as new rules take effect. Tesla was previously ineligible because it had sold more than the government’s 200,000-unit limit.
A few automakers jumped on the price-cut wagon after Tesla’s previous cuts. Ford dropped the prices of some Mustang Mach-E models, but others have held their EV pricing steady. Hyundai, GM, and others did not cut costs, with Volkswagen saying it would rely on the strength of its products and focus on reliability.
