Ford Announced a New Explorer EV, But It Isn't Coming Here

ford announced a new explorer ev but it isn t coming here

Ford recently announced a brand-new electric Explorer, but it’s not yet slated for a U.S. release. The almost $50,000 EV is based on VW’s MEB platform and will be built at Ford’s shiny new EV manufacturing facility in Germany.

Ford touted the Explorer’s German engineering but said it features The Blue Oval’s American styling. The SUV will be offered in two versions and features unique styling immediately recognizable as an Explorer, just from the future. Exterior styling cues include a black C-pillar that imparts a floating roof look, wheel sizes ranging from 19 to 21 inches, and new color choices, such as Lucid Red and Artic Blue.

The interior offers a 15-inch touchscreen and a five-inch driver display like the one in the Mustang Mach-E. Ford equips wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a new seat design, and ambient interior lighting. Ford didn’t elaborate on the specs or range.

The Explorer EV is one of several new electrified models the automaker has planned for Europe over the next two years. Interestingly, the SUV is not coming here – at least in the configurations, it showed. The Explorer EV was specifically designed for the European market and is smaller than the SUV Americans are used to. It’s only 177.1 inches long, almost two feet shorter than the Explorer we get.
